Learn the Story of David Beckham Beyond the Glamour
When we think of David Beckham, the image of a successful, handsome, and millionaire soccer player comes to mind. However, it’s not always been this way. In this article, we’ll share the story of the ‘Spice Boy’.
David Beckham: beginnings
He was born in London in 1975, the son of a factory worker and a hairdresser. He’s the second of three siblings, he has an older and younger sister. As a child, he played soccer in a park close to his home.
When teachers ask him what he wanted to be when he grew up, David always replied: “I want to be a soccer player”. His fondness for Manchester United was passed down from his father who used to go to the Old Trafford Stadium to see the Red Devils play.
Subsequently, David Beckham went to the Bobby Charlton Football School where he won a training session in Barcelona. He signed his first application with Manchester United at the age of 14.
David Beckham’s trajectory
Sir Alex Ferguson was the coach of Manchester United in 1995 when Beckham joined the team after winning the FA Youth Cup.
The 1998-1999 season was one of the most prolific for the red devils. Beckham was one of the team’s stars alongside Ryan Giggs, Phil and Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Roy Kean. In one year, they won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Champions League, and the Intercontinental Cup.
By 2003, David Beckham was already an international figure, however, his image grew, even more, when he joined what’s known as the ‘galactic era of Real Madrid’.
The Spanish team had signed several important players including Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, and Ronaldo. The team won the Spanish Super Cup, Intercontinental Cup, and the European Cup.
In 2007 David Beckham left Real Madrid to play with the American soccer team Los Angeles Galaxy. He returned to Europe in 2008 to play for AC Milan in Italy before ending his career in 2013 playing for Paris Saint Germain.
David Beckham: trajectory in the national team
We cannot ignore David Beckham’s trajectory playing for England. His first international tournament was during the 1998 World Cup in France. He scored a goal in the first phase, however, the team was eliminated in the second phase by Argentina.
By 2000, he was the captain of the team during the EURO cup. He scored a goal against Greece allowing England to participate in the next World Cup (Korea-Japan 2002). They played the Argentine team again and eliminated the South American team in the first round of the tournament.
Afterward, he participated in the 2004 European Championships and the 2006 World Cup in Germany. After participating in the 2006 World Cup, he resigned from the captaincy. His final match for the selection was during the 2008 Euro competition.
To date, Beckham is the only player in the history of England whose scored goals in three World Cups (against Colombia, Argentina and Ecuador).
David Beckham’s private life
When it comes to David Beckham’s life outside of the stadium, he married the Spice Girl and singer Victoria Adams in 1999. The pair had a lavish wedding in an Irish castle. The couple have four children (three boys and one girl, the first two were born in London, the third in Madrid and the final child was born in Los Angeles).
It’s said that Beckham went from being a child who wanted to be a soccer player to being a mega-celebrity just because of his marriage to Victoria. However, although he doesn’t play soccer anymore, he’s still worthy of international news.
