The Sports Calendar For The Rest of 2020

Last update: 01 September, 2020

This year, we’ve already said goodbye to the Olympic Games and Wimbledon. However, there are other events that will simply take place on different dates than originally planned. In the following article, we’ll share the “revised” 2020 sports calendar with you.

The new sports calendar

Since the suspension of all sports in March, there’s been a lot of uncertainty regarding the rest of the year. Over the past few weeks, the “new” calendar has started to take form.

Cycling

The Tour de France has a new confirmed date: departure will take place on the 29th of August in Nice with expected arrival in Paris on the 20th of September. The official announcement was made by the International Cycling Union after the French president restricted mass events in the country until the 1st of July.

The Italian cycling tour will take place from the 3rd to the 25th of October and the Tour of Spain will take place between October 20th and November 8th.

Tennis

All tennis tournaments were suspended when the pandemic began. The 2020 edition of the Wimbledon tournament was canceled, the 2021 edition is expected to take place next year.

Roland Garros flag

The Roland Garros tennis tournament has been postponed for a few months. The tournament which was supposed to take place in May will now be held between the 20th of September and the 4th of October. The US Open is set to take place between the 31st of August and the 13th of September.

Golf

Golf is another sport that was affected by the pandemic. The 2020 British Open was canceled, however, the other Majors could still take place before the end of the year.

The PGA Championship will take place between the 6th to 9th of August. The US Open which was scheduled for June will now take place between the 17th and 20th of September. Finally, the Augusta Masters is speculated to take place between the 12th and 15th of November.

Formula One

Formula One’s calendar is rather optimistic. They intend to fulfill their regular calendar before the end of the year, starting in July. The ‘new season’ began in Austria.

There are races scheduled to take place in the 20 weeks between August 2nd and December 13th. Also in the field of motorsports, the legendary 24 hour Le Mans race will now be held on the 19th of September.

NBA

According to the NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, the 2019-2020 NBA season doesn’t have an official return date. However, it’s speculated that it’ll begin in December. The format of the regular season and playoff games is still being discussed. At the moment, most believe that all games will be played in a single venue.

Champions League

With European leagues returning to the pitch, many have been wondering about the new calendar for the Champions League.

Champions league

According to UEFA, the Champions League is expected to return in August. The duels for the round of 16 will take place on the 7th and 9th of August. The quarter-finals are scheduled for the 11th and 12th (first left) and the 14th and 15th (second leg). The semifinals are scheduled for the 18th and 22nd. The finals will take place on Saturday, August 29th in Istanbul. The 2020-2021 edition is scheduled to begin on the 20th of October.

The rest of the sports calendar

When it comes to other events, the Boston Marathon which was set to take place in April will be held on the 20th of September. The Paris and London editions are scheduled for October. The Rugby Championship will maintain its original program. It’s set to take place between the 8th of August and the 27th of September.

In conclusion, there’s no doubt that September will be “the sports month” 2020 due to the number of competitions scheduled. There’s still a long way to go, however, sports fans are already eagerly awaiting the ninth month of the year.
